Claude Monet Poplars in the Sun, 1891 The National Museum of Western Art, Matsukata Collection, Tokyo © National Museum of Western Art,
The National Gallery is paying homage to Durand-Ruel, the art dealer who, at the peril of his reputation and his fortune, bet on the future of these avant-garde painters (as they were then) and supported them methodically and obstinately until they reached the rails of the the museums.
After Paris and before Philadelphia, this exhibition is in London where it all began, when in 1870 Durand-Ruel met Pissarro and Monet. This a splendid occasion for a different look at Impressionism.
Agnès Anquetin-Diaz is an Art Historian, “Conférencière Nationale des Monuments Historiques et des sites de France.”
