Michael Peppiatt is an art critic and authority on Francis Bacon. He was friends with Francis Bacon from around 1963 up until his death, and his first book Francis Bacon in Your Blood is a deeply intimate memoir-biography of the most important artist of the twentieth century.
In The Existential Englishman, Michael chronicles his relationship with Paris in a series of vignettes structured around the half-dozen addresses he called home when he was a plucky young art critic. It has had brilliant reviews, with the Evening Standard stating ‘‘If you're interested in art, or writing, or Paris, it will ring bells in your head. I loved it’. Michael is also a really engaging speaker, speaking at the Royal Academy and Hatchards Piccadilly last year. |
‘Engaging Peppiatt's passion for Paris, and his clear percetion of its innumerable atmospheres. The personal story is sharpened by a judicious use of the present tense, but it is enhanced above all by a historical vision which enables Michael Pepppiatt to paint the characters of several quartiers with archaeological precision. Even readers unacquainted with the city should be charmed by his portrait’
Gerald Mangan, Times Literary Supplement
‘Brings [Paris] to life so vividly you can almost smell it... Très drôle’
