On 13th July, Arts Minister Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay, awarded the Franco-British Society Literary Prize 2022 to William Doyle for his book “Napoleon At Peace”
The ceremony was followed by fascinating talks on Napoleon by William Doyle and two other authors: Edward Shawcross, author of “The Last Emperor of Mexico”, and Étienne Chilot, author of “In the shadow of Eugenie: The last Empress in exile” |
Author biographies
William Doyle, Franco-British Society Literary Prize winner 2022 for his book “Napoleon At Peace”
Wiliam Doyle was born in Yorkshire (1942) and studied Modern History at Oriel College, Oxford. He went on to take a doctorate for a thesis on eighteenth century Bordeaux. He taught for fourteen years at the University of York before becoming Professor of Modern History at the University of Nottingham in 1981. Five years later he moved to a chair at the University of Bristol, where he remained until retirement in 2008. He has also held a number of visiting appointments in France and the USA. Before Napoleon at Peace he had written seventeen books, mostly on French history, the best known being The Oxford History of the French Revolution (1989, 3rd edn.2018). Elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1998, he is also a corresponding member of the Academies of Bordeaux and Besancon, was one of the founders of the Society for the Study of French History, and is a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes academiques. He lives in Bath.
Edward Shawcross, author of “The Last Emperor of Mexico”
Edward Shawcross is a historian. His latest book, The Last Emperor of Mexico (Faber & Faber, 2022), was selected as one of The Times’ and Sunday Times’ history books of the year for 2022. After graduating from the University of Oxford, Edward Shawcross lived and worked in France, then South Korea and finally Colombia before returning to London where he completed a PhD at UCL. His research specialises on French imperialism in Latin America.
Étienne Chilot, author of “In the shadow of Eugenie: The last Empress in exile”
Historien de formation, Étienne Chilot a étudié à l’université de Paris IV-Sorbonne et à l’École du Louvre. Diplômé de l’INA, il entame une carrière au ministère de la Culture en tant que responsable de la communication du centre de recherche du château de Versailles puis devient responsable des éditions du château de Fontainebleau. Ancien journaliste au magazine Point de Vue Histoire, il est aujourd’hui directeur de maison d’édition.
